Kiplinger Chooses Best Homeowners Insurance Companies of 2025

USAA, Amica, and Erie Insurance are the “most recommended” homeowners insurance providers in the United States, per Kiplinger readers.
American business media giant Kiplinger recently revealed the best homeowners insurance companies of 2025, as chosen by readers.
Unveiled in May, the Kiplinger Readers’ Choice Awards 2025 feature some familiar nationwide names – like USAA – along with regional insurers that continue to punch above their weight – like Erie Insurance and Amica.
Each year, Kiplinger asks its community to name products, services, and companies that have delivered excellent value. They collect the results as part of their annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey.
Kiplinger Readers Choice Awards 2025: Best Homeowners Insurance Companies
According to Kiplinger readers, the best homeowners insurance company in the country, overall, is USAA. Amica, Erie Insurance, and AAA also scored top marks across multiple categories.
Here’s how Kiplinger readers ranked America’s top insurers:
Overall Winner: USAA
USAA scored top marks in all three major categories, including:
- #1 rated (“outstanding”) for competitive rates
- #3 rated (“outstanding”) for claims experience
- #1 rated (“outstanding”) for most recommended
Kiplinger readers praised USAA for its affordable rates, claims handling, and overall policyholder experience. They reported a good experience with the company’s customer service – all while offering lower-than-average premiums. One Kiplinger reader claims to have been with USAA for 50 years and found their response to claims was “superb and unmatched.”
Other Top-Rated Insurers
USAA was the #1 rated homeowners insurance company overall, although Erie, Amica, and AAA also scored top marks in various categories.
Erie Insurance
Erie was popular for homeowners looking to bundle home and auto insurance together to save money. Although all insurers on this list offer bundling, Erie may offer a particularly steep discount – especially for safe drivers and homeowners with no claim history.
Kiplinger readers rated Erie:
- #2 overall for competitive rates
- #2 overall for claims experience
- #3 overall for most recommended
Despite offering competitive rates, Erie didn’t appear to compromise on claims handling or service. Customers reported strong customer service and effective claims handling. They also liked qualifying for discounts for home security systems – like smoke alarms, burglar systems, and automatic sprinklers.
Amica
Amica was rated as being outstanding for claims experience and was one of the most-recommended homeowners insurance companies overall.
- #1 for overall claims experience
- #2 overall for most recommended
Amica scored particularly strong ratings among Kiplinger readers with a recently renovated home or a new construction home. The company also offers competitive rates to homeowners with zero claims over a three-year period. Plus, homeowners can score discounts for installing water and gas leak monitoring systems or opting for paperless billing.
AAA
AAA offers different homeowners insurance options from state to state. However, in states with AAA homeowners coverage, the company scores strongly for claims handling, customer service, and pricing:
- #3 overall for competitive rates
AAA scored particularly strong marks for being available in areas where other insurers have pulled out – like parts of Florida with high hurricane risk and parts of California with high wildfire risk. Despite being one of the limited options in these areas, AAA continues to offer competitive rates.
Kiplinger vs. J.D. Power Home Insurance Rankings
J.D. Power carries weight in the home and auto insurance rating industry. The ratings organization releases annual rankings of top insurers across the country.
Unsurprisingly, J.D. Power’s latest ratings correlated with Kiplinger readers, with some insurers clearly coming out on top.
Key findings from J.D. Power’s latest homeowners insurance rankings include:
- Chubb ranked highest in the homeowners insurance segment (688 score overall), with AIG (680) and Amica (679) in close second and third.
- Erie (674), AAA (671), State Farm (643), and Nationwide (641) came in fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh place. They all scored above the nationwide average (640) for overall customer satisfaction.
- Erie Insurance was the best-rated renters insurance provider for a second consecutive year (score of 713), with Amica (695) and Lemonade (682) ranked second and third.
- J.D. Power doesn’t officially include USAA in its ratings because of its restrictive membership policy (which limits membership to members of the military and their families). However, USAA was the clear winner on J.D. Power’s 1,000-point scale, scoring 737 – nearly 50 points above the next highest-rated homeowners insurance provider (Chubb, at 688).
- AAA’s state-level affiliates, like Automobile Club of Southern CA and CSAA Insurance Group, both scored above average, ranking 671 and 644 on the 1,000-point scale, respectively.
Kiplinger Readers Also Choose Best Auto Insurance Companies
Unsurprisingly, some of the top-rated homeowners insurance companies were also some of the top-rated auto insurance companies.
According to Kiplinger readers, the best auto insurance companies in the United States in 2025 include:
- USAA: USAA scored #1 ratings for its competitive rates, claims experience, and overall recommendations from policyholders. Policyholders liked how easy it was to make a claim. Some readers claim they had insured vehicles for decades with USAA without issue. USAA also had a well-rated mobile app, making it easy to request roadside assistance, pay bills, and review coverage.
- Erie Insurance: Kiplinger readers gave Erie strong marks for its competitive rates (#2 overall, behind USAA). Erie also ranked third for claims experience (behind USAA and Amica) and third for overall recommendations (behind USAA and Amica). Erie auto insurance policyholders praised the company for its “Your Turn” app, which helps drivers earn money for safe driving. Policyholders also liked First Accident Forgiveness and diminishing deductible coverage, available in some states.
- Amica: Amica has some of the best customer loyalty in the auto insurance industry. According to Kiplinger, one-third of Amica policyholders have been with the company 20+ years. Readers liked bundling home and auto insurance with Amica to save. Overall, Amica ranked second for claims experience and overall recommendations (behind only USAA).
- Travelers: Travelers is one of the most competitively priced auto insurance companies in the United States in 2025, according to Kiplinger readers, trailing just behind USAA and Erie Insurance. According to MarketWatch, the average Travelers policyholder pays around $161 for full coverage car insurance – a steep drop from the nationwide average of $201. Drivers who need only minimum coverage, meanwhile, can pay around $57.
J.D. Power also ranked the best auto insurance companies by subregion, with AAA (684), Shelter (677), Auto-Owners Insurance (654), Erie (713), Amica (709), and Travelers (667) all scoring top marks in one or more subregions.
The insurance companies above have something in common: they’re all for-profit enterprises (although Amica is a mutual insurance company that distributes profits to policyholders instead of stockholders).
Like other for-profit enterprises, insurers aim to make money – not provide charity to policyholders.
Even top-rated insurance companies face complaints from policyholders – and even top-rated insurers may delay, deny, and defend claims to limit payout.
